Keep my citizens warm, dry, fed, and safe (from the elements & bad actors).

Daily writing prompt
What would you change about modern society?

I would guarantee a basic income for all Canadian citizens. It’d be enough for one’s basic needs: shelter, food, health care, and community safety. I honestly feel that if my citizens are healthy, fed, and know that their families will not be attacked, other problems can be tackled. When the mob is hungry, sick and fearful, all hell breaks loose (my history is loaded with such situations [example: post WW1 Germany; what I’m seeing in the 2024-era U.S.A.; post-U.S.S.R.; the dirty 1930s…]).

monday update from our neighbourhood.

July 23rd. The month is almost over and I enjoy not having to deal with the oh-fuck-I’m-going-back-to-the-classroom-and-dealing-with-peers. I maintain my struggles with teaching were NEVER about the students. They had the excuse of being young adults… still learning about themselves and the larger world. My fellow teachers were a difficult bunch. Like me, they struggled with maintaining professional detachment with the entire bureaucracy. It was also hard as hell remaining civilised with each other. I witnessed too many grown-ass adults devolve into cliques and gossiping poultry (if you don’t believe me, go to the nearest chicken coop and listen to the chickens communicate with each other). The pecking order one sees happens behind closed doors in the workrooms!

I view my pension as a guaranteed income for my family (of 2.75 [1.0 spouse + 0.75 equivalent-humans]). Since I have expensive hobbies, such as wanting fancy forestry-farm-fishing equipment, I’ll put my name into the supply teacher pool. That extra income will allow me to get some additions to the home. Shiny things! And student interaction is nice.

Meh… enough rehashing old thoughts & fears (leave that for my therapist). Here are images from my community!
