Historians will be puzzled by 1970-onward

The question: What world events do I remember?

This is a fun question. I was born in 1970 and here’s what I remember:

  • 1979-1981, The USA hostages in revolutionary Iran. US president Billy Carter being incapable of dealing with the issue (or at least that was how it was editorialized to me as a kid).
  • 1968-1972. The Apollo Moon landings? Nope. No memory of that on the news (I would have been 0.1-2 years old). But I do remember the awesome 1973-74 Skylab program. I loved the thought of recycled rocket bodies being used for space platforms.
  • 1955-1975, I knew it was still going on, but I have no memory of the Vietnam war (and the iconic April 30, 1975 helicopter evacuation of the US embasy [fall of Saigon]).
  • 1970-1985. The metric system being introduced to my elementary school and the rest of Canada. My 30 cm, 1980-super ruler eventually snapped in half. And its edges were rounded off by it rubbing on pencil cases! BTW – my teacher-dad was convinced that I was damaging its corners… he never believed me (f**ker).
  • 1974. The FLQ crisis (The October Crisis). And Prime Minister Piere Elliot Trudeau dealing with that.
  • Spring, 1986. The death of my brother. Yes, I had a brother. He died just shy of the 1986 Vancouver Expo opening up in the Summer at False Creek, Vancouver (BC).
  • The attempted assasination of US president Ronald Regan. I watched that live on TV.
  • West Germany. East Germany. The wall coming down. Ronald Regan’s state of the union address… “Mikael Gorbachev, tear down the wall”.
  • The collapse of the U.S.S.R. When it happened, I had no idea whether the Russians would recover from that anarchy.
  • British Columbia’s insane Western Canadian Concept and their desire to cede from Canada.
  • B.C. Premier Van Der Zalm. Fantasy Gardens, in Richmond, BC. Everything. All of his insanity.
  • The cold war. Numbers stations. The Russian Woodpecker.
  • 1982. UK premier Margaret Thatcher — and the Falkands War.
  • 1989. Tiananmen Square Massacre, China. I learned VERY quickly that Chinese citizens were not a homogeneous mass of automitons.
  • Too many African revolutions to count. Apparteid in South Africa.
  • More recent: the Ontario blackout.
  • Of course, 9/11. The NYC World Trade Centre collapse.
  • Covid 19 Global pandemic.
  • Let’s hope the bullshit happening in the Ukraine and Israel fizzles out.
My bell will have 2 possible fates: it will be used as an obnoxious door bell or used at the chicken coop to call the feathered dinosaurs for muster ([fowl] morning parade drills ).
