Cultural Appropriation

PN is angry. When I got up this morning, TS showed me a news article on CBC. First Nation’s advocate and musician Buffy Sainte-Marie isn’t who she says she is. Her identity was a fabrication. And her birth family were silenced by the musician’s legal team. I feel betrayed by this 82-year-old entertainer who profited from these stories — and I am a white, middle-aged, 100% European male! Ms. Sainte-Marie’s current statements appear like damage control on her part. I cannot separate the person from the music… not in this case. And I learned a wry, sly new word – pretendian. F**k.

Here are the articles so that you can make your own decisions. CBC article link. Global News link. Hollywood Reporter link.

This story is hitting me hard. It carries the same emotional weight… as if I found out that my Canadian icon, Bruce Cockburn, lip-synced his music or had a team of ghost-writers composing his lyrics and melodies. And I really, REALLY don’t want to know any new revelations about David Suzuki.

I know — these people are public figures. And they are human beings. It still feels like a gut punch or the proverbial sand beneath my feet shifting around (and making me unsteady).
