I’d like to share a few of my favourite content providers (from YouTube and Patreon)…

This narrator’s Patreon account can be found here (link). For a measly $1USD/story, I get a whole metric f&&k-ton of additional content. The narrator’s voice (or at least his recording gear) makes him sound an awful lot like a British actor who co-stared in one of my favourite remakes of Sherlock Holmes stories… and as Doctor Strange… and (bewilderingly) as Khan.
Ah, Mister Carlson’s Lab. For people like me who abandoned tinkering as a pre-teenager, this channel is a fantastic reintroduction to the art(!) of DIY electronics troubleshooting and repair. My instincts tell me that he was (or is?) an instructor in a past-career. MC is a master electrician and electrical engineer… whose narration style is clear, concise, and coherent. He is a rare(?) example of a Canadian content provider who I follow — and support on Patreon. His channel’s production quality has steadily improved over the seasons. I also get a kick out of his references to various landmarks in British Columbia, Canada (my birthplace). On almost every episode, he will warn viewers to ‘do your research’… and ‘if you are are following along, you are doing so at your own risk’. “To learn electronics in a very different and effective way, and gain access to Mr Carlson’s personal designs and inventions, visit the Mr Carlson’s Lab Patreon page here: https://www.patreon.com/MrCarlsonsLab “(Source: YouTube Video Platform, Sept. 2, 2023 at 09:08 EST).
I just caught up with this content provider’s work. Diesel Creek. Do not let his young age fool you — he is a highly skilled mechanic stationed out of Pennsylvania, USA. The host, Matt, has a remarkable ability at instruction. Yes, some of his antics ‘on the farm’ might make you want to call 911 on his behalf (he occasionally flaunts OH&S [Occupational Health and Safety] regulations). If one takes his show with a grain of salt, there is plenty of good information peppered in his 30-45 minute episodes. I can even tolerate some of the clever product placement. Sometimes his episodes remind me of Mike Rowe from Dirty Jobs. Viewer discretion is advised!

Here is a PARTIAL list of other content providers that I enjoy listening to on my headphones (while dozing on my exercise ball):

  • A Vox In The Void. Warhammer 40K?! I first heard about this phenomena from my colleagues son. Holy hell, this is a deep space opera and dystopian universe. I recommend this narrator and the stories he tells. He also narrates poetry from the WW1 trenches… and other material. A link to his support page.
  • The Volgun. Non-YouTube link. I cannot figure out WHAT his nationality is. Is he from the UK? Is he a native speaker from the USA? His deadpan mock-lecturing style (including his sign-off […”thank you for listening… if you still are… and you are all dismissed”…]) reminds me of some of my university lectures.
  • The Exploring Series. This narrator started his series within the SCP universe (link). Recently, he has migrated to the Warhammer 40K and cosmic-horror story realms. The provider uses crystal-clear audio tools and provides stories up to the ~2h mark!
  • Pseudopod, Escape Pod. Until recently, I was financially supporting Escape Artists (I regret having to re-prioritize my entertainment spending habits). The umbrella group is called Escape Artists. Generally, their audio quality is good and the stories are varied. Their vast back-catalogue has material for all tastes (and tolerances).
